Read More Once the REAL ID act goes into full effect in 2020, you will need this type of secure ID to board domestic airline flights or enter certain federal facilities. If you do not have a drivers license or ID card that complies with these requirements, you must have an alternative form of identification instead.
It is your choice as to whether or not you want to upgrade your current state-issued credential to a secure ID. On the other hand, if you are a first-time applicant, you can only receive an enhanced ID. In any case, an IN REAL ID driver’s license can only be obtained by visiting the BMV in person. During your visit, you will be asked to provide documentation that verifies who you are, where you live and what your Social Security Number (SSN) is.
The process for obtaining a REAL ID driver license is similar to the one for getting a standard ID or license. As such, you will still need to undergo any tests that are required for these credentials, such as a vision screening or driving knowledge exam. The fees for REAL IDs are also the same as those for standard credentials.
